Think Global, Act Local
People for Animals, Wilderness, and Sustainability Foundation or PAWS Foundation, started as a student run organisation established during the pandemic to help hungry and injured animals in need. The seed of our organisation was planted on March 22, 2020 on the day of Janata Curfew, when Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the nation on combating the challenge of COVID-19 and stated that the patience and resolve of all Indians is vital in fighting the global pandemic which has wreaked havoc all over the world.
Since its inception on the the day one of Janta Curfew, PAWS has been informally working in and around JNU campus. On Sunday, March 22, 2020 when most students left the JNU campus and hostel mess and public eateries were closed and the campus animals, particularly dogs and cats were left to fend for themselves with their usual food sources made unavailable , volunteers assocaited with PAWS took it upon themselves to help care for those left hungry and in need of medical assistane.
As Covid swept through the world disrupting entire nations, our volunteers organised feeding and rescue efforts for hungry and injured animals from the scorching heat of the summer to the numbing cold of the winter of 2020 until campus functions returned to full capacity. As restrictions on movement were lifted, we expanded our work to neutering of campus dogs and cats as well. PAWS also organised a blood donation camp in May 2020 and donated 35 units of blood to AIIMS Blood Bank at the peak of the first wave of the Pandemic.
Over time our organisation has cemented its foundation and expanded our footprint, covering the entire JNU and neighbouring institutions including IIT-Delhi, NIPGR, NII, IIMC as well as neighbouring residential areas of Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, RK Puram etc, thus creating a local model of self-financed, decentralised, digitally empowered feeder and rescue network, as envisioned by the honorable PM in Atma-Nirbhar Bharat.
PAWS is also a member of the ABC Committee of JNU. As of August 3, 2023, we formally registered under Section 8 (C) of the Companies Act, 2013 and we continue to work for the betterment of the animals and environment of various campuses across Delhi. We believe that a nationwide online/offline awareness session about the importance of Animals, Wilderness and Sustainability in Society is a must for all students in schools and colleges.
